TRAI, the independent controlling authority backed by Government for telecommunication facility in India has recently issued a direction to all Mobile Phone service providers that in all cases of activation of any value added service the service provider has to obtain a confirmation from consumers within 24 hours of activation of value added services through SMS or e-mail or fax or in writing. If no such confirmation is given by the subscribers the value added service activated has to be de-activated without any cost to the consumer.
This instruction is given as TRA as it has been receiving complaints from consumers regarding activation of value added services, including caller tunes on their mobile handsets by service providers without their explicit consent.
In such situations, the common grievance of subscribers is the that the service providers ignore their request for unsubsription.
This step is taken as per TRAI mainly to facilitate subscribers who accidentally subscribe to any of the value added services offered by mobile service providers.
During the period 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2011 TRAI had received many such complaints from consumers. Shri Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology in informed TRAI's stand on this issue in Lok Sabha.
